Health Minister seeks inquiry into alleged SPC fraud

Health and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva yesterday called for an immediate inquiry into newspaper reports exposing an alleged fraud involving the State Pharmaceutical Corporation.

The reports, highlighted in two national newspapers yesterday, claimed the CPC has paid Rs.11 million to a local private company to buy certain antibiotics prescribed for patients recovering from surgery when another bidder, an Indian company offered a lower price - Rs.3 million, on the same drug.

The health inspectors began their inquiry into the allegation yesterday itself, a release from the Health Ministry states. The minister issued instructions for an immediate inquiry following the reports to Deputy Director General in charge of health inspectors, the release further said.

He has assured action against the people responsible regardless of their position.
