Veteran Rohan, Ravi, Dinesh win Suntel WoW C'ships

by Bernard Perera

Veteran driver Rohan de Silva Dinesh Deheragoda, Ravi Mayadunne Dilshard Hamdoon and Rohith de Silva were declared as top drivers as champions of the Suntel WoW racing championships after conclusion of the third stage at Pannala international circuit last Sunday.

Rohan de Silva who is famous for his dare devil driving behind the wheel of his Ford Vandieman Formula post 85 model proved that he is still the best driver of formulas. He could not get on top at the start of the race and was trailing Dinesh Jayawardene for over five laps. His experience came into good use at this stage and got past the front runner in the sixth lap to take full control of the event's end, which also sealed the championship for this class.

The pre 85 model Formula event was a thrilling one with young Shehara de Silva and Lt. Ravi Mayadunne battling for supremacy both facing the starter with equal points (16) Shehara was off to a flying start and was in full control of the event with soldier chasing behind a young lass. It was a fine battle witnessed only for nearly three laps. Shehara had to pull out of the race as her vehicle came out with problems. From here onward it was plain sailing for soldier from Jaffna Ravi Mayadunne. He had this opportunity help him win class championship. Shehara finished as overall runner up with 16 points from three stages.

Dinesh Deheragoda though he failed to win on this day behind his Mitsubishi Evo VIII was the comfortable winner of the championship for super cars event with a total of 26 points well ahead of second placed Dan Dissanayake who did not compete in this final stage. On Sunday Deheragoda did not want to go flat out for a win knowing that even a second place which carried six points would definitely seal his championship. This event on this day was dominated by Javid Wahab driving his Honda Caltex. Wahab who competed only in this third stage managed to collect maximum points and tied with Dan Dissanayake.

Rohith de Silva and Dilshad Hamdoon carried away the Suntel WoW championship for Group A Standard Mini Cars and Group N Ford Laser/Mazda 323 classes comfortably For their championship victories they had totals of 30 points, 26 points respectively.

Dhammika Pieris who had a field day on the Katukurunda race circuit weeks ago came up with another brilliant performance winning Group SL-N 10-12 kg category event. Dhammika who made a fine start accelerated well to find a good lead in the first lap. With this lead he controlled the race for him.

He thrilled the crowds who watched him doing his cornering in a controlled and calculated manner giving no room for his followers speed past him at any stage. Proving that he has mastered basics on this circuit.

Dhammika also came up with another good drive when to be placed second in the group N. One Mike Mazda Car event. Experienced Dilshard Hamdoon was the winner here in this race. Dhammika was seen hanging on to the winner until the finish showing that he is a driver who never gives up a race until it flagged off.

Motor cycle events was too evenly contested among Krishan Dias, Visal Fernando and Shane Gunewardene. Visal Fernando on his Honda CBR won the Open Four stroke class event pushing back all opposition from Nuwan Dissanayake and Frank Dissanayake.

Visal was the only rider to have won two events on this day. He won the standard Modified upto 125 CC class also against fast riding Nuwan Dissanayake. Visal also had two second places which gave him the champions award for the day.

Shane Gunewardene riding his Turbo Bug 648 CC was outstanding in the Street Bike trail open event. He was behind Rohan Jayaratne (Honda CRN) for over four laps. Shane making good use power in his machine got past Rohana and went on to increase the lead. He kept onto his lead until he received the chequered flag.

Krishan Dias too managed to win a double on his Yamaha JZR. He had tough opposition coming from Visal Fernando once and later from young Rehan Bultjens. Randy Anthony and S. Ismath Noon were the other riders who made an impact on this day showing the motor racing fans their skills on track.
