Two Army intelligence operatives escape murder attempt

Two Army Intelligence Operatives returning to their camp in a civil vehicle after an official duty in Polonnaruwa came under gunfire on Tuesday at about 5.00 p.m. from two suspected LTTE gunmen while they were travelling in the Manampitiya area, the Military spokesman said in a press release last night.

Two Army Intelligence Operatives, attached to the Welikanda Army camp were returning to their camp along the Welikanda-Polonnaruwa Main Supply Route (MSR) when their vehicle was suddenly attacked by gunmen at the roadside. Those in the affected vehicle opened fire towards the assailants in self-defence and later managed to nab those two gunmen with the help of the Police and troops deployed in the area.

The assailants who tried to take to their heels after the abortive attempt and who are believed to be from LTTE are now in the custody of theManampitiya police. Police investigations are on.
