Police apprehend three suspected armed LTTE cadres near Parliament by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Welikade Police yesterday apprehended three alleged LTTE cadres along with another man near the Parliament while they were travelling in a Pajero jeep (64-5476). Police seized two micro pistols in possession with the suspects. Police told the Daily News the suspects were dressed in an attire similar to that of the MSD. At the questioning the suspects had told Police that they were on their way to commit a robbery. Police investigations had revealed that three Tamil youths were residents of Trincomalee, Madampe while the other suspect was from Ratmalana. Later in the evening, a special Police team found a luxury car belonging to the suspects parked at the Majestic City car park. On the directions of Western Province South DIG K. P. P. Pathirana, Welikade Police are investigating to ascertain whether the suspects were targeting a high ranking official and motive of the suspects. Meanwhile, in a another incident notorious gangster alias "Thoppi Chaminda" wanted by Police in connection with number of murders and several robberies was shot dead by Police near Nawala junction when the suspect tried to break free from Police custody along with another suspect. Police said the main suspect attempted to attack the police officers inside the van while returning from Welikade Police. The Police was compelled to shoot at the suspect, an officer said. A report from Kahathuduwe Police said a fire broke at popular vocalist Rukantha and Chandralekas house at Pinro Gardens at Mattegoda causing damage to the top floor. Preliminary investigations had revealed that a lighted candle ignited the fire. No one was injured. |
