Homagama hospital receives equipment worth Rs. 25m from philanthropist

Mr. Anura Abeygunawardana and Mrs. Uta Abeygunawardana of Panadura, presently residing in West Germany donated Rs. 25 m worth equipment comprising 6 automatic anaesthetic scanners and 20 Nos. wheelchairs for the use of paralytic patients at the Homagama base hospital of the Western Provincial Council Health Ministry.

Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Minister of Science and Technology, speaking at the handing over ceremony observed that Sri Lankan sons residing abroad gifting lavishly to their Motherland gives us immense pride.

Ananda Tissa Perera former member PC and D. Rajapaksa and Sujeewa Rajapaksa organized the formal handing over by Abeygunawardana Chairman of "Pina" organisation in Germany Mrs. Abeygunawardane and their daughter were present. The gift was officially accepted by Gamini Tilakasiri Chief organiser, SLFP, Homagama and Western Province Minister of Youth Affairs, Women's Affairs, Fisheries and Rural Development on behalf of the Minister of Health of the PC.

Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana observed: "Medical Science and Technology have made impressive progress. Valuable equipment have been introduced but we have financial constraints. Yet our UPFA Government has undertaken full responsibility to promote the nation's health sector. This area will not be privatised but with willing philanthropists we could improve health conditions. We are grateful to organisations like 'Pina' headed by Mr. Abeygunawardana. Our 'NERD' also intends to produce valuable medical equipment."

Anura Abeygunawardana observed: My parents sent me to Germany in 1974 and in 1980 enlisted the cooperation of about 60 Sri Lankans and organised 'Pina' intended to help Sri Lanka. To date 'Pina' has donated millions of rupees worth of equipment. We intend donating a scanner unit too to the premature baby unit. True to our name 'Pina' (in Sinhala) we will concentrate on more and more meritorious deeds.

WP Minister Gamini Tillakasiri observed: "The Homagama hospital occupies a special position among hospitals of the area. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga allocated Rs. 45 m for this building to house special units, patients receive attention now within 10 minutes. We are extremely grateful to philanthropists from 'Pina' for their continuing assistance, and wish them merit.

Dr. S. Pangoda, Deputy Director of Health, observed: "Mr. A. A. Abeygunawardana's valuable gift in fact provides us strength and encouragement. We found the equipment valuable and suited for our conditions and we are grateful to the 'Pina' organisation.

Ananda Tissa Perera former Member PC, Ananda Kumarasiri, Chairman, Hospital Advisory Board also spoke.

The DMO Dr. R. Gabadage, Dr. J. A. Karunaratna, B. M. D. Jayasekara, Sujeewa and a large gathering of the public were present.
