by Florence Wickramage The Meteorological Organisation of the United Kingdom recently gifted a Weather News Presentation system to the Meteorology Department office. This 20,000 pound sterling gift is part of the UKMO contribution to the Voluntary Cooperation Program of the World Meteorological Organization. Accepting the new technology media weather presentation system gift, Environment and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M.Fowzie said that the new system would be specially beneficial to people whose lives and livelihoods are affected by the weather. The Minister explained that " this system is designed to give the Meteorology Department the ability to prepare graphics for print media and the television. The system could also produce broadcasts which makes it easier for the broadcasters to show and also make sure that the message about the weather is presented by professional forecasters using all their skills in delivering relevant messages to people whose lives and livelihoods are affected by the weather". Weather forecast presentations from this system are also meant to promote the effective use and appreciation of the products that are developed and disseminated by the Met. department. Minister Fowzie said that this is not the first time that the United Kingdom had provided assistence to Sri Lanka in this field. In the 1980s, the UKMO provided a complete computer system with the necessary software to assist us in managing climatological data. This system was later replaced with another system complete with spare parts. Bryn Bettany, the Consultant from the manufacturing concern of the new system was in Sri Lanka to install the new system and conducted a 4 week long program in training personnel. |
