by Manjula Fernando University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Ranjith Mendis last week promised medical students that the medical graduates merit list would be based on a common MCQ paper instead of the current Z-score method from next year. The Medical Faculty Students Union, backed by the Colombo Medical faculty academic staff, staged a protest campaign in front of the UGC last week demanding the authorities to prepare the merit list for internships based on a common MCQ paper. President of the Student Union Kremlin Wickremasinghe said the protest also expected to compel the authorities to issue the 97/98 batch merit list early. The UGC authorities held a meeting with the student union leaders following the protest where they were given this pledge by Prof. Mendis. The UGC Chairman has said the decision to deviate from the Z-score method has already been taken at higher levels but they need to overcome slow administrative procedures. The Education Ministry Secretary at a meeting early this year promised medical students to change the current procedure which is largely criticised of being inaccurate."We are simply worried about the delay," the Student Union President said. At last week's meeting, Prof. Mendis said he would consult the Examinations Commissioner to get his views on the prospects of conducting a new MCQ paper for medical students. This meeting was also attended by Vice Chairman Prof. L. Ratnayake and senior academic members of Colombo Medical Faculty Prof. Ravindra Fernando, Prof. Manori Senanayake and Prof. Arundathie Kurukulasooriya. Medical students held a protest in February this year urging the authorities to change the merit list procedure. Subsequently, the UGC wrote to all deans of medical faculties that they will offer a common MCQ paper to use as the bases for computing the merit list. |
