President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga left for Teheran yesterday on a two day State visit to Iran at the invitation of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. She was accompanied by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha and Senior officials. The Sri Lankan President will hold wide ranging discussions with Iranian President Mohommad Khatami on issues of mutual concern. During the visit a Preferential Trade Agreement and several Memoranda of Understanding are to be signed. Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake will act as Minister of Defence till the President's return. The Education portfolio will be administered by Minister Mangala Samaraweera(School Education) and Minister Dinesh Gunawardene, Higher Education. President Kumaratunga will be received at the Islamic Republic Mansion on arrival by the Iranian President with a guard of honour. The President is expected to call on the Spiritual Leader of Iran Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei. She is also expected to hold wide ranging discussions with Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on issues of mutual concern. President Kumaratunga is also expected to meet Chairman of the Expediency Council and former President of Iran Ali Akbar Hashmi Rafsanjani. A Preferential Trade Agreement and a Memoranda of Understanding, in the fields of fields of Environment, Health, Friendship and on Exemption of Visas for Diplomatic and Services/Official passports will be signed between the two countries during the President's visit. |
