Journey from shipboard to 'Situ Medura' :

Portrait of a young man as an entrepreneur

by Aditha Dissanayake

PC. What does P and C stand for? Elementary Mr. Watson.

But when it comes to defining P and C as in PC House? Could the letters stand (other than the obvious) for Perseverance and Courage? Pleasing and Caring?

The staff at PC House (Pvt) Ltd would vouch for the latter (evidence: the smiling Receptionist who catches me admiring the bouquet of flowers on her desk and promptly offers a red rose) while S.H.M Rishan, the Chief Executive Officer of PC House epitomises the former.

Born in the year of the first ever revolution in the country, 1971, S.H.M Rishan at thirty-three is surely an exemplary figure of the present generation.

The business he began in 1997, at the age of twenty-six, is today one of the leading IT solution providers in the country offering not only the best options on computers and accessories but also an unparalleled after-sales service through an islandwide network of branches ranging from Kurunegala to Bandarawella, Galle to Jaffna.

According to Rizwan Anise, Head of Marketing, the turnover of the company is around "Rs. 300 million a month. The current staff strength of PC House exceeds 450 employees and our divisions have resources and strength to provide our customers the best professional service that can be given."

Barely seven years since its inception, PC House is proud to offer their own branded PC called "Panora". Panora, which is said to mean "the rising sun", is a product 100% owned by PC house and which will soon be manufactured in Sri Lanka.

Emphasizing the difference between "assembling" a computer ("something which everyone does, these days"), and "manufacturing" one, Anise says PC House will soon be opening their manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka. Imagine being the owner of a homemade PC!

Yet the beginnings of PC House were humble. CEO Rishan began life after A/levels as a sailor.

While collecting the capital he needed to begin a business, out on the wild seas he was exposed not only to the natural elements but also to the international markets.

After almost five years of seafaring he came home to roost and to open a business which , in time to come, would accommodate the county's Information Communication Technology boom by marketing world-renowned high quality computers and accessories.

With the future promising the propagation of our very own locally manufactured computers in the SAARC region PC House is surely a company the nation could be proud of. Needless to say, seaman turned entrepreneur Rishan, has sailed into the best port-of-call he could ever arrive at.

To learn more about this young legend in the IT world, listen to him speak about his life, see him at work and at home with his family, watch Situ Medura, tonight at 9.30 on ITN.
