by P. Krishnaswamy Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) political advisor and former MP Dr. K. Vigneswaran denied reports that appeared in certain sections of the local press alleging that some senior members of the party had 'escaped to foreign countries' and party leader, Minister Douglas Devananda, sought assistance from Indian leaders for militarily strengthening the party during his recent visit to India. He told the 'Daily News' that these reports were absolutely false and malicious, intended at bring disrepute to the party. The EPDP had shunned armed violence as a means of achieving the just aspirations of the Tamil people and returned to the democratic mainstream bestowing absolute trust in the process for accomplishing the desired goal, he said. Any member of the party has the right to leave the party at his discretion at any time of his choice but on this occasion some have gone abroad for medical treatment and it is untrue that some have run away, he said. The EPDP has placed its clear-cut proposals by way of a solution to the ethnic problem. Local and international forces that are interested in the welfare of the Tamil people have supported the stance of the EPDP on this, Vigneswaran said. Party leader Douglas Devananda's recent visit to India was for participation in a high level conference on the current political situation in Sri Lanka. During his visit he met with Indian political leaders including Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh and Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi. Contrary to the reports in the press, he never sought assistance for strengthening the party militarily but instead he sought assistance for rehabilitation activities in the war-torn North and East, Vigneswaran said. |
