New office opened in Gampaha:

NHDA to waive off housing scheme rent surcharge

"The government has decided to waive off the surcharge for the unpaid instalments and rental of the houses of National Housing Development Authority (NHDA).

This concession will be effective till December 31, 2004. This will be a relief to householders who default the payment of monthly instalments and they have to settle the arrears payment to get this benefit before the end of this year.

Minister of Housing and Construction Industry and Eastern Province Education and Irrigation Development, Ferial Ashraff opened the new District office building of the NHDA at Gampaha.

The new building constructed within eight months costing Rs. 6 million will house the NHDA District Office which was located in rented buildings, before.

Minister Ashraff said "Our vision for housing development should be targeted at three major categories of the society. The first category consists of the groups who have the means and the affordability for building a house of their own. What they should be provided is the technical support service.

The second category is the group who owns a land of their own yet without financial ability to construct a house. It is important to make financial and banking facilities available to them.

The families with no land ownership and nil affordability for repayment of a loan fall into the third category. They need to be assisted in all fronts to achieve their housing objective.

The NHDA, as the main government agency for housing development is considerate towards these all three categories.

The government has taken action to research and evolve low cost construction methodologies based on the traditional and rural technologies unique to given geographical areas and the indigenous raw materials available in such areas. This endeavour will help us to provide a comfortable house at a low cost," she said.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage, Vijitha Herath said that the NHDA, which, since 1979, had rendered a yeoman service to the people of Gampaha District, has now constructed a house for its own.

The NHDA in the future will be able to provide an orderly and qualitative service to the people under the able guidance of Minister Mrs. Ferial Ashraff.

Following the opening of the new building the web Site designed to mark the 25th Anniversary of NHDA was launched by Minister Ferial Ashraff.

Deputy Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs, Pandu Bandaranayake, Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction Industry and Eastern Province Education and Irrigation Development, Chandrasiri Gajadeera, Parliamentarian Mrs. Anjan Umma, Gampaha Divisional Secretary, V.K. Ruparatne, District Manager of NHDA for Gampaha, Rajaguru Bandara and several others also addressed the gathering.

The meeting was followed by awarding housing loans, grants and deeds to beneficiaries by the distinguished guests.
