National Boxing Championships 2004: 

Alexander boxes his way to final

It all points to an exciting evening of boxing at its best when the finals of the 79th Sri Lanka National Championships will be worked off at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo commencing at 5.00 p.m. today. The finalists have been found after some keenly contested semifinals of the respective weight categories worked off yesterday.

The hottest contest of last night's bouts saw Sri Lanka boxer K.A.C.N. Alexander, representing Unichella, emerging winner after a hotly contested tussle with C.P. Harsha Kumara of Unichella in their light flyweight under 48kg semifinal bout. Alexander was given some anxious moments from the opponent from their sister company.

The scores were tied in the final stages before Alexander had a close call to make it to today's final. Alexander will now box with C.M.C. Tennekoon of Army 'A' in today's light flyweight final. Tennekoon out pointed C.D.S. Herath of Police 'A' in the other semi final.

Soldier H.V. Jayantha Kumara will take on R.M.A.V. Ratnayake of Slimline in today's flyweight under 51kg final. Thetwo semifinal bouts of this event worked off yesterday ended in identical fashion with referee stopping the contests in the second round. Ratnayake beat K.M. Sugathadasa while Kumara overcame Kalutara District BA's A.V. Mallikarachchi.

Sailor D.P.M.S. Dharmasiri made it to the finals of the super heavyweight over 91 kg event when he beat airman M. Hanzar with referee stopping the contest in round one.

In the semi finals of the welterweight under 69kg, W.M.C. Ratnayake (Police 'B') out pointed his law enforcing team mate W.M.C. Banadra while Slimline's S.I. Kumara won on points against Unichella's R. Dangalle.

Army 'A's P.R.D. Fernando knocked out Policeman A.G.S.N. Kumara in the 'semis' to power his way to the final of the middleweight under 75kg category. Fernando's opponent in the final will be R.S. Hettiarachchi (Slimline) who had an easy points decision win over airman V.L.N. Suwaris.

The semifinals of the light heavyweight under 81kg event saw M.A.J.K. Meewella (Army 'B') beating T.J. Michelle (Air Force) and H.M.S.P. Wanninayake (Army) overcoming W.M.P. Awantha (Navy) - referee stopping both the contests during round two. R.M.S.N. Banadara (Air Force) beat D.G.M.P. Doluweera (KDBA) and P.M. Arunasiri (Army) beat R.D.S.C. Ratmalgoda (Navy) in the 'semis' of heavyweight under-91kg.

The finalists of the bantamweight under 54kg will be D.L. Kahatapitiya of Kalutara DBA and M.D.K. Wanniarahchchi of Slimline. Kahatapitiya won on points against N.S. Hettiarachchi of Negombo BC while Wanniarachchi beat airman A.V.W. Weeraparakrama -referee stopped the contest in round one.

In the semi finals of the featherweight under 51kg, A.K.G.K. Sameera (Slimline) beat W.A.D.A. Wijeratne (Kandy YMCA) and airman M.M.D. Faris beat soldier M.A.N. Bandara. S.P.C.S. Jayatilleke (Army) lost to K.A.P. Kandanarachchi (Navy 'B') and M.A. Divarathe (Army 'B') beat W.M.R. Wekadapola (Kingswood) in the semis of lightweight under 64kg.

The lightweight under 60 event semifinals saw K.K. Jayasundara (Navy 'A') beating H.A.S.S. Wettasinghe (Air Force) and R.M.U.Bandara (Slimline) overcoming R.M.U. Ratnayake (Police 'B').

Managing Director of Lanka Lubricants (Caltex), Kishu Gomes will be the chief guest at today's finals. The four-day meet, conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka was a well organized affair under the direction of its President Dian Gomes, who will also grace the awards ceremony.
