India feels Bush will give momentum to trade, South Asian peace process

NEW DELHI, Thursday (AFP)

The re-elected Bush administration will keep pressing India and Pakistan to speed up their slow-moving peace process and could help boost India's already booming outsourcing sector, analysts said Thursday.

George W. Bush "is a president who does not shy away from using power - in fact he revels in it," said Probir Purkayastha, political science professor at Delhi University.

"He will keep US pressure on India and Pakistan to arrive at a peaceful development in the South Asian region."

US-led international diplomacy pulled nuclear-armed India and Pakistan back from the brink of a fourth war in 2002 after an attack on the Indian parliament which New Delhi blamed on Islamist militants backed by Pakistan.

"During Bush's regime, India managed to get talks going with Pakistan and it feels particularly the Bush administration has its campaign in place against terrorism," said Satish Jacob, author and political analyst.

"India hopes this will benefit them and that the US will not allow Pakistan to encourage terrorist attacks in Kashmir," he said. India and Pakistan agreed in January to launch formal talks aimed at settling their dispute over the Himalayan region of Kashmir, trigger of two of their three wars.

India's left-backed Congress government, elected in May, was expected to issue a formal response later to Bush's win.

Washington last month lifted nuclear export controls on Indian organisations after New Delhi promised to address US non-proliferation worries. It was the latest easing of sanctions which were imposed on India after it declared itself a nuclear power in 1998.
