Shilpa 2004 showcase at BMICH:

Government pledges to develop small industries

By Irangika Range

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said the Government has considered local handicraft, textile and small industries are major players in the national economy, and it will take every possible actions to preserve and develop traditional and modern handicrafts thereby uplifting the social and economic status of the craftsmen.

Speaking at the opening of the "Shilpa 2004" a national small and rural industries exhibition at the BMICH yesterday, the Premier said that handicrafts are the mirror of a nation.

"They reflect our traditional practices, life style and culture".

However in the recent past local crafts and craftsmen were neglected. Today the situation has changed as the crafts have a big demand locally and internationally. Therefore the Government has recognised the necessity of encouraging, preserving and assisting traditional crafts and craftsmen, he said.

Thus several steps have already been taken to revive the traditional crafts and improve the livelihood of the craftsmen", he said.

He praised the attempt that has been taken by the Small and Rural Industries Ministry to introduce local products to the international market.

"We should manufacture to the modern day requirements and reach the international market". Premier Rajapakse said. The exhibition provides good opportunities to local craftsmen to strengthen business links and build new trade links.

Minister of Small and Rural Industries, Lal Kantha said the Ministry's aim is to introduce local arts and crafts to the international market.

"The main objective of the event is to provide market facilities to sell local craftsmen's products at reasonable prices and meet potential buyers. Handicraft provides an insight into the rich cultures of various communities who live in this country. Therefore the Ministry has started several programs to protect and develop traditional craft items.

About 147 trade stalls including 49 by the National Craft Council, 40 from the Textile Department, 54 from the Industrial Development Board and two by the Sigiriya Handicrafts Village are exhibiting their products.

Deputy Minister Sunil Handunnetti also participated. The exhibition organised by the Ministry of Small and Rural Industries and it will conclude on November 7.
