National Boxing Championships : 

Alexander advances to Q-finals

Sri Lanka boxer K.P.C.N. Alexander, representing Unichella, advanced to the quarter finals of light flyweight under-48kg category on the opening day of the 79th Sri Lanka National Boxing championships begun at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium ring yesterday.

Boxing in Ring One on the first day evening, Alexander did not take much time to overcome his opponent D.K.L.V. Perera of Nugegoda Boxing Club, who was forced to retire in the third round.

In another bout of the same weight class, F.P.B.P. Subasinghe of Army 'B' beat L.I. Bamunusinghe of Police 'B' on points 27-26 after a keenly contested first round bout. Another leading national boxer, N.B.K. Wanniarachchi of Slimline Sports Club advanced to the quarters of bantamweight u-44 kg class when referee stopped the contest in round one. Thus, Wannuarachchi overcame A.M.S.S. Kumara of Police 'A'.

In another bout of the same weight class, K.N. Jayakody of Army 'A' received a walk over from V.G.L. Kumara of Army 'B' while M.R. Senanayake of Unichella beat K.S. Rajapakse of Veyangoda BC on points 20-19.

In the featherweight u-57 category, M.N. Bandara of Army 'A' beat R.A.K.L. Rupasinghe of Veyangoda BC on a points decision 33-13, D.M.S.B. Dissanayake (Police 'A') beat K.P.C.S. Gunatillake (Veyangoda BC) on points 8-7 and M.M.D. Peiris (Air Force) beat K.A.R.S. Kodituwakku (Seevali BC), who was forced to retire early.

The semi finalists were found in the flyweight u 51kg category. In the quarterfinal bouts worked off last night in Ring One, R.M.A.B. Ratnayake (Slimline) beat C.P. Abeyratne (Slimline) on points 10-9, K.M. Sugathadasa (Unichella) beat V.L.S.S. Rajasinghe (Nugegoda BC) - referee stopped the contest in round one, Jagath Kumara (Army 'A') k/o W,P. Samantha of Police 'A' during second round and A.V. Mallikarachchi (KDBA) knocked out beat P.W.I. Kumara (Nugegoda BC) also in round two.

R.H. Hettiararchchi of Slimline knocked out A. Ekanayake of Air Force whil D.L.M. Suwaris out pointed U.D.H.P.R. Perera (Nugegoda BC) 35-15. At Ring Two, W.M.C.S. Bandara booked a place in the semi finals of the welterweight u-69kg category when he k/o S.I. Rajakumara of Navy 'A' during second round.

In the lightweight u-60k category, H.A.S.S. Wettasinghe (Air Force)out pointed D.A.T.S. Dunusinghe (Veyangoda BC), G.N.S. Kumara (Unichella) was disqualified for holding on against M.G.C.M. Jayawardena (Kingswood), R.M.U.D. Ratnayake (Police) out pointed M.L.P. Prabath (SBC) 5-0, M.P.C. Karunaratne (Veyangoda BC) beat A.G.R. Aluthgedara (Army) 4-1 and R.M.U. Bandara (Slimline) beat A. Welagedara (Army) 4-1.

The meet is conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association under the guidance of its President Dian Gomes. The four-day meet will serve as the final trial to pick the Sri Lanka team for the President's Trophy championship in Indonesia next month.
