Thivanka on his INSEAD experience and CIMA success The CIMA Business Manager of the Year 2003 at the CIMA Janashakthi Pinnacle awards 2003 is Thivanka Rangala who at 30 is the Head of Finance and Internet Business at the premier cellular company, Dialog GSM. Having won a scholarship to follow a three-week management program at INSEAD, Thivanka shares the experience he had at the INSEAD University, a premier business school in Paris. Thivanka comes from a diverse academic background with most of his junior years abroad in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Thivanka first started doing Bio Science up to the Advanced Level and ended doing CIMA. The profession seems to have kindled his liking enticing him to give up Bio Science and qualify as a Chartered Management Accountant. Thivanka made amends to further strengthen his academic qualifications with an MBA from the University of Western Sydney. He said that there is a lot of learning at Dialog where he is the Head of Finance - Corporate Finance and Head of Internet business, many things that were learnt at CIMA and the MBA could be really challenged and put into practice. "One is truly able to utilise the full sphere of what was learnt at Dialog," he said. The culmination of his academic background and growth at Dialog are some of the reasons why he was adjudged the CIMA Business Manager of the Year at the CIMA - Janashakthi Pinnacle Awards held to felicitate and honour outstanding Business Leadership. This award enabled Thivanka to visit INSEAD in Paris, one of the foremost business schools in the world. He went through a three-week training program, about which he is absolutely delighted. He said Prof. Anroud De Mayer, Deputy Dean of INSEAD whom he met at the Pinnacle Awards in Sri Lanka, was an excellent source of guidance through-out the training program which in itself was brilliantly planned out. "What they taught at INSEAD was very practical and attuned to the business world. The subject matter covered all key elements of an MBA program and ensured indepth familiarisation of essential analytical tools. The facilities on campus were the best in class for a teaching institution and no money has being spared to offer students the very best," Thivanka said. INSEAD has two campuses in Fontainebleau, in France and in Singapore. The programs are gruelling, thought provoking and concentrated and the atmosphere electric. The participants are selected from the finest and brightest. Rangala said it is hard work, but there is gain as the program will change the perspective towards work and work related areas. Students have described it as "drinking from a fire hydrant." "However the program itself is planned in such a manner that in its entirety it's an immensely enjoyable and unique experience." The program had around 80 other participants from different parts of the world all of whom where high calibre which resulted in excellent networking experience, he said. Thivanka said that that CIMA was a pillar for his success," with CIMA's diverse subject portfolio doing my MBA an the intensive program at INSEAD were much easier as most of the fundamentals are covered in CIMA's syllabus, laying a sound foundation for academic and business growth." |
