Canon President reiterates commitment to Lankan market

Canon's President and CEO of Canon Singapore (Pte) Ltd, Hideki Ozawa said that as a global leader in digital imaging solutions, with a global network which now includes 153 companies, employing more than 100,000 people, Canon has for the last three decades remained among the top three companies to earn the most number of patents.

"In fact Canon continues to be ranked as one of the world's largest Corporations since 1993 by the Fortune Global 500 Ranking," he said. He was addressing the media on Tuesday at a joint press briefing that was held with their local partners, the Metropolitan Group.

Ozawa, together with senior regional Canon heads were in Sri Lanka to reaffirm their commitment to the Sri Lankan market, where Canon, represented by Metropolitan for almost three decades has been the market leader, with 2003 being a record breaking year for Metropolitan.

"During 2003 Canon's superiority in product, quality and features enabled Metropolitan to post a record breaking sales performance of over 1,400 units of Canon photocopiers , and eight out of 10 work-places have at least one piece of equipment purchased from and supported by Metropolitan," said Chairman, Metropolitan Group, J.J. Ambani. He said that Metropolitan was recognised as the Best Distributor based on sales performance in Southeast Asia among all Copier distributors in the region.

Canon's current market share for Canon products in offices in Sri Lanka is around 45%, while regionally they hold the number one position and are the global market leader for Digital Copiers.

Ambani said that yet another feather in Sri Lanka's cap was the fact that Sri Lanka had been chosen as the venue for Canon India's Leadership Summit, with almost 250 Canon delegates in attendance.

"Colombo was chosen after a survey among our partners and Sri Lanka was the most popular choice", said President and CEO, Canon India, Alan Grant. To date Metropolitan has introduced over 150 copier models and has an installed base of over 15,000 copier units.

One of Canon's foremost products introduced to Sri Lanka in 1976 was the plain paper copier. It was Metropolitan who first marked the entry of the Personal Computer to Sri Lanka with the introduction of the Canon BX and CX series. The Company is also responsible for the very first computerisation project in Sri Lanka, which was for the Bank of Ceylon with the Canon Model AS 100, which eventually led to this particular model being the market leader for Asia.
