Udugampola in NY marathon by Richard Dwight The 64-year-old Sri Lankan veteran, Vernon Chandrasiri Udugampola, of Northwood London, the running in Marathons comes naturally, taking them all in his stride. He takes pride in this form of sport and has wide experience in running marathons which he does by keeping fit through running approximately 4 to 5 miles daily for the past several years. Equally interesting to note, is that Udugampola, a grandfather at that with a bent for philanthropy, has earned a reputation for raising money for charitable causes from his running. Udugampola has collected considerable sums of money, running in smaller UK marathons and in the major London marathon held earlier this year he was able to collect substantial funds which on his request was made use of to purchase a Perfusor Compact S. Syringe Pump for the Cancer Hospital Maharagama. He does have a passion to help the less fortunate in Sri Lanka - And Udugampola is at it again and takes part in the major prestigious New York Marathon which will be held on Sunday, November 7. The course starts from Staten Island at the foot of the Verrazano Bridge and runs through five boroughs of New York, viz, Staten Island, Brooklyn Queens, the Bronx and finishes at Central Park, Manhattan. It is the world's most celebrated road race and there are many other celebrations associated with it. The donations, Udugampola will receive from this run, will be directed through 'Caring Hands' toward charity nominated by him. It's indeed praiseworthy to take part for a noble cause and we wish Udugampola a good run. |
