by Florence Wickramage The Aadivaasi Community in Dambana has taken to chena cultivation, vegetable farming and agriculture as a livelihood forfeiting their traditional hunting. They mainly depended on tanks within the Maduru Oya National Park for their supply of water for the cultivations. One such tank which the community depended on was the Pavurukandiya Wewa in Dambana which had been abandoned during the dry season and was overgrown with weeds. On one of his recent visits to Dambana, Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie inspected the abandoned tank along with Vanniyala Aththo who told the Minister that their agricultural activities were hampered due to lack of water. Vanniyala Aththo requested the Minister to help them to reconstruct the Pavurukandiya Tank. Acceding to their request Minister Fowzie re-visited Dambana and launched reconstruction work of the Pavurukandiya Tank along with Vanniyala Aththo. |
