DIG seeks media help to combat crime

by Sarath Malalasekera

Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath has sought Print and Electronic media assistance to combat the escalating crime rate in the Colombo district.

"I personally appeal to them to extend their utmost help to the Police to wipeout crime and ensure peace and security", DIG Herath told a media briefing at the Police Headquarters yesterday morning.

About 50 police personnel including Colombo Division women police officers had been trained to face any situation in Colombo district and to assist the public promptly during an emergency.

During the training, police personnel obtained the assistance of several lecturers of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University, the Attorney General's Department, Government Analyst, Legal Division of the Police Department and the Sports Ministry.

"We also had to educate police personnel on modern technology including the DNA test", he said.

Persons who want to inform about a crime in their areas or any unusual situation could contact the Emergency on 2433333, 2446736, 2422521, 2324998, 2437156 and 2224436.

The public also could obtain a free telephone call from Sri Lanka Telecom 155, Dialog 112 and Celtell 999/112.

Police will also obtain the three Forces' assistance when necessary. A special operation unit has also been set up to control crimes and assist the public. The public could contact 2454220, 2454295, 2471000 and 2454221, the DIG said.

DIG Herath said police officers' prime duty should be to arrest drug traffickers and not persons who consume it.

He said rather than prosecuting the consumer, police should rehabilitate drug addicts and make him a valuable citizen. There are about 700 persons at the Gangodavila 'Meth Medura' where drug addicts are being rehabilitated. Forty per cent drug addicts have not studied even upto the second standard.

The DIG also appealed to the media to assist police to eradicate the hard drug menace.

In 1981, only one hard drug case was detected. But today there are about 2000 cases detected for a month, he said.Colombo Central Senior SPs Lucky Dissanayake, Colombo Crime Division Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda, Colombo North Senior SP H. S. Dayananda, SPs Gamini Senevirante, Cyril Fernando, Hemantha Adikari, ASPs Premala Ranagala, Anton Sirikumara, P.C.A. Siriwardena and Officials of the National Intelligence Bureau also participated.
