Govt allocations for six rural development projects in 2005 By Ramani Kangaraarachchi The government will allocate Rs. 600,000 each to Grama Seva Divisions for six rural development projects next year said Minister of Finance Dr. Sarath Amunugama at the Business Forum organised by the Federation of Associations of Small and Medium Enterprises of Sri Lanka at the BMICH on Friday. The theme was "SMEs leading the way for economic growth". The Minister said that Small and Medium Enterprises have contributed a great deal for the economy in many countries and Sri Lanka's SMEs should also be able to contribute more for the development of the country. Deputy Minister of Small and Rural Industries, Sunil Handunnetti said that 70 per cent of the country's population belongs to the rural community but only 2.3 per cent have been able to contribute to the economy. Therefore the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs should improve this situation. Secretary of the FASME Janaki Amarasinghe called upon Minister Amunugama to reduce taxes and the prices of imported raw materials and to control imports affecting the industries adversely in order to overcome the constraints and improve the present situation. Chairman FASME Nalin Kamaragoda, President NCC, A.S.K. De S Gunasekara also spoke. The National Chamber of Commerce (NCCSL) has provided many services for SMEs by setting up Trade Information Centres with internet facilities in Puttlam, Anuradhapura, Matara, Ratnapura and Matale, Conducting training programs under the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB), providing Business clinics, computer services and statistics. |
