News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | President to meet Opposition Leader today President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will meet Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today at the President House in a move which is seen as yet another attempt to obtain the latter's participation at the political committee of the National Advisory Committee for Peace and Reconciliation. Addressing the first meeting of the political committee of the NACPR, President Kumaratunga noted that the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader have been designated as co-chairs of the Political committee. President Kumaratunga said some of the major political parties which were not present at the first meeting were having discussions with the Government over their participation and she will meet the Opposition Leader with a view to secure his participation at the next meeting. She offered the chairmanship of the political committee to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and added that she would participate at the committee proceedings when required to do so by it. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, Communist Party, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, Ceylon Workers Congress, Alternative Group of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Eelam People's Democratic Party, National Unity Alliance and National Muslim Congress participated at this meeting held at the BMICH. |
