by Wasantha Ramanayake A group of health workers numbering 274 yesterday filed a Fundamental Rights application in the Supreme Court against the termination of their service. Petitioners comprising of 274 casual labourers attached to various government hospitals cited Director General Health Services, the Health Minister, the Secretary to the Cabinet of Ministers and the Attorney General as respondents. The petitioners stated that they were appointed as casual labourers on November 11, 2003 and assigned to various hospitals. The respondents terminated their services on September 30, in violation of their rights. They appealed to the first respondent the Director General of Health Services without success. They further stated that about 300 new labourers had been recruited by the respondents in their place. The petitioners claimed that a majority of them were the sole bread winners of their families and they were totally out of employment. Attorney-at-law Sunethra Lakshmiweva filed the petition. |
