22,000 new jobs from tourism next year

by Anjana Gamage

The local tourism industry will generate an additional 22,000 new jobs for youth from next year, Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) sources told the Daily News.

The new Sri Lanka Tourism action plan for 2005 and beyond has generated the 22,000 new jobs which will be provided through various tourism related activities. According to the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion Anura Bandaranaike, the new action plan is a comprehensive road map to raise visitor arrivals to the island and make tourism the number one foreign exchange earner for the country by 2010.

According to SLTB Chairman Udaya Nanayakkara, the authorities have to fund the marketing spree entirely through industry funds and not State support. "Currently we are charging for all our services and are operating commercially," he said.

The marketing and promotional activities undertaken will include a public relations campaign to internationally boost the island's image as well as advertising on BBC and CNN.

Meanwhile, SLTB sources said Sri Lanka is embarking on a US$ 7 million tourism campaign next year to boost the island's exotic image.

Compared to the US$ 8 million this year, SLTB is expecting an income of over US$ 11.8 million in 2005. Tourist arrivals are expected to increase by 15 per cent in 2004. Therefore, the daily average per visitor will go up to around US$ 85 from the current US$ 70.
