Another remanded in Samurdhi fund scam

Kalutara Sahana Community Organisation President Megawathie Thabrew produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena in connection with the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 2.1 million of Samurdhi Development Society Funds was remanded till November 8.

SP Sunil Sahabandu of the Special Investigation Unit filing a further report before court said Thabrew was produced under the Public Property Act and moved for remand until the completion of investigations.

Sanjay Gamage, Counsel for Thabrew, moving for bail denied all allegations preferred against his client by the investigators.

On an application by the Counsel, the Judge directed Prison authorities to produce her before the Prison medical officer to obtain treatment for her ailment.

Earlier, the Judge ordered former UNP Samurdhi Minister S. B. Dissanayake, former Women's Affairs Minister Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake and five others not to leave the country and to appear before court on November 8.

The other five are former Samurdhi Director General Kumari Navarathne, Megawathie Thabrew of Maharagama, Renuka Navaratne Wijekoon of Moneragala, S. Wasana Bandara Bulathsinhala of Mirihana, Anoma Kumari Herath. The special investigation unit is investigating the alleged misappropriation of Samurdhi funds to the tune of Rs. 3.1 million. The Judge directed the case to be called on November 8, 2004.
