by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Mahavihara Chapter observed that an environment should be there in the country in which media personnel should have the freedom to perform their duties unopposed and unobstructed by any individuals and political parties. The Most Ven. Mahanayake Thera made those observations when a group of journalists led by Associate Editor 'Dinamina' Jayasinghe Pemaratne called on the Prelate to make him aware of the incident in which Lake House Kandy staff journalist Sanjaya Maturata was assaulted by UNP thugs when he was covering the UNP agitation campaign in Kandy on October 26. The victim of the assault Sanjaya Asela Mathurata was also present with the group of journalists. After 'Dinamina' Associate Editor Jayasinghe Pemaratne explained to the Mahanayake Thera the incident, the Mahanayake said that he was displeased over the incident and he would tell all political leaders when they come for his advise that they should not keep room for a repetition of such ugly incidents. The Most Ven. Mahanayake Thera inquired from the deputation whether there were any legal provisions to take action against causing obstructions to media personnel in performing their legitimate and democratic duties the way the public servants were covered by such laws, and they replied in the negative. The Mahanayake Thera said that there should have been such laws. |
