Malaysia shuts out Lankan male workers by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Sri Lanka loses job opportunities in Malaysia due to the Malaysian government's decision to recruit male workers only from 12 countries. Sri Lanka is not included in this list. Recruitment Manager Mohamed Azher of Crown Recruiting Agency in Sri Lanka said that their client in Malaysia returned the applications sent by him for certain male workers stating that recruitment of male workers from Sri Lanka is not approved by their government for unknown reasons. The Malaysian government issued a letter to their foreign employment agencies recently giving a list of twelve countries from where male workers would be recruited. An official of the Foreign Employment Bureau Sri Lanka said that the bureau has signed a MoU with Malaysia with regard to recruitment but the categories have not yet been finalised by the Malaysian government. However, no male workers have been sent from Sri Lanka to Malaysia in the recent past and the officials at the bureau are unaware of the letter issued by the Malaysian government to their foreign employment agencies. Sources from the Malaysian High Commission said that their home office has temporarily postponed all types of foreign recruitment at present. However, some foreign employment agencies have got the approval to send female workers to Malaysia. Foreign Employment Agencies in Sri Lanka point out that the authorities at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia should consult the Malaysian government and clarify the reason as to why recruitment of male workers from Sri Lanka has been denied. |
