by Irangika Range

The Ministry of Small and Rural Industries has organised the "Shilpa 2004" a National Small and Rural Industries exhibition and fair to introduce local handicrafts, textiles and small industrialists products to the international market. The exhibition is also aimed to provide market facilities to sell local craftsmen's products at good prices and to honour industrialists' expert skills by presenting presidential awards. The exhibition under the theme "Viskam Dethata Saviyak" will be held from November 4 to 7 at the BMICH. The Chief Guest will be Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

Small and Rural Industries Minister K. D. Lal Kantha told the media last week that the government provides facilities to promote local handicrafts, textiles and small industrialist's products by considering them as major players in the national production. "Shilpa 2004 will provide many benefits such as strengthening business links and building new trade links in the local market as well as international market. This is also considered the best place to see the latest developments and meet new buyers," the minister said.

The minister said about 147 trade stalls including 49 of the National Craft Council, 40 of the Textile Department, 54 of the Industrial Development Board and two of the Sigiriya Handicrafts Village will be set up at the exhibition. "The ministry has also decided to remit the income which will be received from trade stalls to the Welfare Fund of Handicraftsmen.

The special feature of the event is to present presidential awards for best-selected creations. The awards ceremony will be held on December 15 under the patronage of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the BMICH. The People's Bank will introduce a special loan scheme for small industrialists at the event," the minister said. Deputy Minister Sunil Handunhetti also participated.
