No tobacco sale near educational institutions

CHENNAI, Sunday (The Hindu)

Sale of tobacco products is to be banned within a 100-metre radius of educational institutions all over the country from December 1, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Anbumani Ramadoss, said here.

Talking to reporters after participating in an Indian Academy of Interdisciplinary Dentistry meeting, Dr. Anbumani said the manufacturers must indicate the nicotine and tar content in tobacco products, and show the statutory warning on such products more prominently from December 1.

The move will complete the Centre's decision to streamline the manufacture and sale of tobacco products through six regulations.

Three other conditions ban on smoking in public places; direct or indirect promotion of tobacco products in advertisements; and sale of such products to minors - came into effect in May this year, Dr. Anbumani said.
