Training commences for second batch of unemployed graduates

by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

Central Provincial Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said that it was for the first time in the history of employing graduates that a number of unemployed graduates as large as 41,000 were provided with employment at once due to the initiative taken by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

If there were any more unemployed graduates left out in addition to the number already employed, their cases would be considered, he said.

The Chief Minister made those observations at the inauguration of the training courses for the second batch of unemployed graduates selected to be recruited to the Public Services under the government's scheme to provide employment to unemployed graduates.

The event took place at the Kandyan Art Association Cultural Hall. Provincial Councillor Dilum Amunugama was also present.

Ekanayake said that what ever the government in power, their administrative decisions had to be put into practice through public servants. Therefore those public servants should be an intellectual lot. The United Alliance government had strengthened the Public Service by recruiting 41,000 graduates to that service.

The President had delegated more responsibilities of training the second batch of unemployed graduates selected to be recruited to the public sector, to Provincial Councils. They, with the assistance of relevant officials, were taking with dedication to the maximum to make that task a success.

University undergraduates, took to various struggles and on some occasions, were able to make the rulers kneel down before them.

But it was very unfortunates that they, once graduated, had to form Associations and carry on protest campaigns on the streets demanding jobs, he said.

It was the present Government that gave 41,000 jobs in keeping with the pledge given at the recent general elections, Ekanayake said.
