Speed limits out, faster train rides soon by Rajmi Manatunga Commuters can expect faster train rides soon with the Railways Department launching a program to do away with speed limits imposed on rail tracks islandwide. Railways Department sources told the Daily News that under the new program, all speed limits imposed on trains running on certain lines owing to the poor condition of rail tracks will be removed within nine months. The total number of speed limits imposed on railway lines around the country are nearly 600, the majority on the coastal line. "Under the project's first phase we hope to remove 250 speed limits through the renovation of rail tracks within three months at a cost of Rs. 100 million. "The rest of the speed limits will be removed under a long term project of six months," he said. The spokesman said they have received Rs. 100 million required for the first phase of the project from the Treasury which will be spent on the purchase of 360,000 sleepers and other material required for renovation of rail tracks. The Department recently removed around 60 speed limits including 20 in the coastal line following renovations on certain rail tracks. Dilapidated rail tracks have become a major cause of train accidents in the country. The problem has compelled railway authorities to impose speed limits resulting in constant delays in train operations. |
