Green Protection Golden Award for Florence

Our staffer Florence Wickramage proudly walked away with the Green Protection Golden Award presented by the GEF - the Small Grants Facility of the UNDP at a glittering awards ceremony held at the Namel-Malini Punchi Theatre, Borella recently.

Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie presented the award.

Florence, a well-known journalist specialising in environmental writing deserves a golden award, having contributed immensely towards environmental protection and conservation during her illustrious career spanning 27 years.

The selection of the awards were determined by the Green Media Network, a Non-Governmental organisation comprising a group of environmental organisations. Florence was chosen for this award by an independent panel of experts who took into consideration the valuable services rendered by her through her numerous articles and programs.

Florence first joined Lake House in 1977 and after a short stint at the ITN in the latter part of 1981 joined the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation at its inception in 1982. Florence has served as a News and Program Producer of the Rupavahini for 15 years, during which period she also functioned as the Chief Coordinator for Asiavision. Florence also received the "Best Environment Reporter - 2003 Award" from the Editors Guild of Sri Lanka.

She received her training in International News Coordination and also as a News Trainer at the Asian Institute of Broadcasting Development in Malaysia. She has travelled widely to represent Rupavahini in many international fora.

Florence, an ardent nature lover has extensively travelled within the country to gather information for her diverse articles. Some of her passionate areas include elephant and forest conservation.

Displaying her writing skills both in verse and prose, Florence has won many international and national awards for essay and poetry. During a short stay in the US, her poem titled 'Beautiful Thoughts' was published in the Showcase Edition by the US Poets' Guild.

Florence is the daughter of Lt. Col W.J. Wickramage (R) of the Salvation Army and the late Mrs. Wickramage.

The Green Award ceremony held on October 1 was attended by Coordinator of the GEF facility Sherine Samarasekera and veteran media person Edwin Ariyadasa.
