Nine Maoists killed in Nepal, govt yet to respond to cease-fire

Kathmandu, Monday (PTI)

Nine Maoist rebels were killed during skirmishes with the security forces while the government is yet to respond to the rebel announcement of a nine-day truce during the Dussera festival beginning from October 20.

Three armed Maoists were killed at Mainabatti river area of Siraha district, other killed at Ratmate area of Panchthar district and two killed at Siddhapokhari area of Sankhuwasabha district during separate search operations, according to the Public Relation Directorate of the Army Headquarters.

The security forces have recovered three pistols, four guns, 15 socket bombs and bomb making equipments from the rebels during the search operations. Meanwhile, three Maoist cadres have denounced past acts of violence and terror and surrendered in Sindhupalchowk district before the security forces.

Nepal Communist Party-UML has issued a statement asking both the government and the Maoists to announce cease-fire during Dussera, Dipawali and Chhat festivals and urged them to sit for a dialogue. The government has not yet responded to the nine day cease-fire announced by the Maoists during Dussera.
