The Deputy Minister for Small and Medium Enterprise Development Hussein Bhaila MP assumed duties at the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Lanlib Building, Nawam Mawatha yesterday Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sripathi Suriarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of SME Development P.M. Leelarathne, Senior Officials of the Institutions under the Ministry were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the Senior officials of Institutions under the Ministry Deputy Minister Hussein said that exports and small and medium enterprise development was prime concern of the UPFA Government.

"This is shown by the very fact that this Ministry is kept under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga so that she could give all the encouragement to ensure that the SME Sector is developed to its full potential You all being experts know the vital role that the SME Sector plays in the Development Plans of the country.

He also said that we have to be more proactive in our role to ensure that the SME Sector develops. "You will see the type of Institutions that has been retained under this Ministry.

The EDB which develops exports, the Gems and Jewellery Authority covers the area where we utilize our natural resources to earn foreign exchange, the Standard Institution which lay the foundation for the type of articles we are going to develop for exports, these are all prime areas identified by her excellency".

He further said that it is our duty to work together to ensure that the concerns and the thinkings of the President is going to be fulfilled.
