Trees to protect water in catchment areas by Florence Wickramage The first in a series of establishing plant nurseries for the benefit of water catchment areas was inaugurated at Kethhena in Kalutara to mark Tree Planting Day on October 15 under the direction of Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardene. These nurseries will be established in areas coming under the purview of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB). A special feature in these nurseries will be to produce trees peculiar to different climatic conditions throughout the island, Working Director, NWS&DB Sunil Sarath Perera told the Daily News yesterday. A plant nursery project to produce 100,000 plants for the Mahanuwara District was inaugurated at Hantana foothills on the same day while planting of Kumbuk trees along the Menik Ganga in Kataragama and several plant nurseries in the Anuradhapura District by the NWS&DB also got under way on Tree Planting Day. Minister Dinesh Gunawardene highlighted the importance of protecting water catchment areas which provide water resources to the whole island by growing more trees. These water resources supply the country's demand for pure drinking water. Minister Gunawardene stressed the need for more public oriented programmes to create public sensitivity and to enlist their cooperation for the protection of water resources from pollution for sustainable use was of priority importance for the successful implementation of the programme. The NWS&DB has launched the islandwide Nurseries Programme simultaneously with the public awareness programs, to mark National Tree Planting Day. |
