Lanka's ISO certification to go international by Shirajiv Sirimane The Government has decided to set up an international Accreditation Board to endorse the ISO certification in Sri Lanka. According to Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Tissa Vitharana the main advantage would be that the ISO certifications would have international recognition. Most of the ISO certifications issued in Sri Lanka are sometimes not internationally recognised. This is because Sri Lanka does not have an internationally recognised accreditation Board. Some companies have to spend over US $ 15 million to obtain the international recognition. "If the government can set up an Accreditation Board to certify laboratories set up in Sri Lanka local companies can have an internationally accepted certificate with less complications and minimum cost," the Minister said. The Minister said that this was proposed over three years ago when he was a consultant in the Ministry. "But the idea never got off the ground. The Government has to invest around Rs. 5 million to set up this Board. "I have decided to go ahead with this project and it should be set up early next year," he said. Speaking to the Daily News after the awards ceremony organised by I E Group of Companies he said that any developing country has to depend on technology. Sri Lanka has been depending on Foreign Direct Investments for technological advancement. "Sri Lanka has the talent and local investors should take risk capital for investment in this area which is very important to the country," he said. He said that IE Group of Companies has taken a lead in the manufacture of electronic equipment and others should follow. The company has joined the University of Moratuwa to share their technical know-how and this too is a step taken in the right direction to enhance company technology. |
