Direct passenger and cargo flights to Russia again by Shirajiv Sirimane Sri Lanka has recommenced direct passenger and cargo flights to Moscow, Russia. KrasAir, one of the four airlines operated by the Russian government will operate two flights a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. The flights will commence from October 27 and a Boeing 767-200 would be operated every Wednesday and Sunday. This is the first international flight by KrasAir which commenced operations eight years ago. According to Manager, Sri Lanka Maldiviana Aviation (Pvt) Ltd, the general sales agent for the airline, M. Dilip Samaraweera the flight would have a stop over in Male. "We are mainly targeting the growing tourism market in Russia to Male and Colombo. In addition there is a big perishable cargo market to Male," he said. Dilip said that they are expecting a bigger student market in June specially Moscow since it is the school vacation in Russia. In addition the airline would also promote Sri Lankan tourists to Moscow. Since this would be the only air link between Moscow and Sri Lanka with a one-hour stopover the airfare too would be lesser than the other airlines. "This too would be an advantage for the airline," he said. He said that the company's Managing Director, Arthur Lipov had received many requests from Travel Agents as well as parents requesting a direct airline. He set up Maldiviana Aviation (Pvt) Ltd specially to promote this airline. The last direct airline was operated by Aeroflot which wound up its operations last year. Subsequently the airline operated a few charter flights last year. |
