South African women in thrilling win

South Africa scored a thrilling one run win over Sri Lanka in their women's world indoor cricket tournament qualifying round match played at the Austasia Sports Complex in Thalawathugoda yesterday.

The Lankans batting first hit up a commanding 92 runs from their 16 overs with Dilani Surangika making a top score of 21. In addition Hiruka Fernando (13), Deepika Ranasinghe (19) and Deepashka Perera (19) also made useful contributions.

Hilda Nienaber returned superb bowling figures of three wickets for minus three runs and received good support from Michelle Van (2 for 4) and Mel de Swart (2 for 2). In reply South Africa made a superb run chase and finished at 93 runs from their 16 overs.

The most significant contribution came from Hilda Nienaber who hit a top score of 30 runs while coming into bat as the last pair along with Alta Katze. Earlier Hanri Srydrop scored a solid 25 batting at number three and set the pace for an exciting finish. Deepashka Perera and Deepika Ranasinghe both returned identical bowling figures of three wickets for three runs for Sri Lanka.
