American coaches conduct workshops for Lankan cagers Two American basketball coaches Courtland Freeman and Omari Faulkner arrived in the country on a five-day visit organised by the American Centre of the US Embassy in conjunction with the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF). Both Freeman and Faulkner are recent graduates of Georgetown University, one of the best university basketball teams in the United States. They will serve as the first cultural envoys from the U.S. Department of State's pilot program (Culture Connect) focused on using basketball to increase mutual understanding and illustrate some of the positive aspects of American culture, including teamwork, free expression and hard work. Accompanying the cultural envoys will be Brian Sexton, a senior official in the State Department's Office of Educational and Cultural Affairs. They met Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Jeevan Kumaranatunga and had discussions with representatives of the Sri Lanka side at the Police SC pavilion and also conducted a theoretical workshop for 20 persons at the same venue. They also conducted a workshop for the national team, followed by a demonstration game with the men and women. Freeman and Faulkner conducted a workshop for at least 30 University students at the Air Force courts, and was involved in another workshop at Ananda College. They conducted two workshops at Royal College yesterday (one for boys between 12 and 16 years), and then another workshop at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya for girls between 12 and 16 years. |
