Pakistan win but Sri Lanka in final

LAHORE, Pakistan, Thursday (AFP) Pakistan gained a morale boosting six wicket win before the tri-series final as they foiled a sparkling hundred by Sri Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu in the day-night league game at Gaddafi stadium here on Thursday.

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq had reasons to smile as he fired his team to the second successful chase at the venue with an aggressive 76 not out off 58 balls to see his team reach the target in 48.5 overs.

Atapattu hit a sparkling 111 to lead Sri Lanka to 293-6 in their 50 overs after they were put in by Pakistan in a dress rehearsal of Saturday's final at the same venue between the two teams. Zimbabwe were the other team in the competition.

Inzamam hit eight fours and a six as Sri Lanka lacked bite in the absence of star off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan who is recovering from a shoulder injury and is not on this tour.

Pakistan were off to a sound start of 99 by the 21st over as both Yasir Hameed and Salman Butt blunted the tourists' new ball attack of experienced left handers Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa.

Hameed, who had string of poor scores, hit six fours and a six off Zoysa before he was bowled by leg-spinner Upul Chandana followed by Butt who edged Vaas behind the stump after making 57 with six fours.

Sri Lanka matched Pakistan's sloppy fielding by grassing Hameed twice, on 0 and 13 and Butt on 17 - twice the unlucky bowler being Zoysa.

After openers departure, Malik and Inzamam further punished the tourists' attack with a stand of 71 for the third wicket.

With 84 needed off the last 11 overs, Dilhara Fernando gave Sri Lanka one last chance by bowling Malik for 56 but Inzamam added a quickfire 74 for the fourth wicket with Yousuf Youhana who made 28-ball 30.

Abdul Razzaq hit the winning bounadry and remained not out on 4.

When Sri Lanka batted, Atapattu hit eight attractive boundaries and two sixes during his 114-ball innings to set the cornerstone of the innings after the tourists lost two early wickets. The 33-year-old Atapattu led the recovery during a solid 146-run stand with Kumar Sangakkara who made a crafty 69 after Pakistan new ball bowler Rana Naveedul Hassan struck twice inside seven overs.

Naveed forced an edge off Saman Jayantha to wicketkeeper Moin Khan after Jayantha had made 9 and in his next over the bowler trapped experienced Sanath Jayasuriya leg before for 10.

From 26-2, Atapattu and Sangakkara batted with resolve and were aided by some sloppy fielding by Pakistan. Atapattu was dropped at 31 and Sangakkara twice on 54. Sangakkara hit eight well timed boundaries during his 82-ball innings.

Atapattu reached his 11th hundred in 233 matches with a flick off Naveed for two and shared another stand of 61 for the fourth wicket with Mahela Jayawardene who made 18.

Sri Lankan skipper was finally run out in the 45th over when he tried to take a quick single but failed to beat Naveed's throw.

Pakistan's express pacer Shoaib Akhtar was given just four overs which cost 30 and the home attack further suffered after umpire Simon Taufel of Australia and Pakistani umpire Nadeem Ghauri banned the home team's new ball bowler Mohammad Sami for intimidating bowling at the Sri Lankan batsmen in the 47th over. Sri Lanka took full advantage of Sami's absence by scoring 49 runs in the last five overs.
