LTTE says homeguards will be released soon

by Ranil Wijayapala

There is prospect of a settlement over the release of the two Homeguards arrested by the LTTE on August 10 in Gomarankadawala, Trincomalee as the 10 LTTE cadres who have been granted bail by the Court were released last afternoon from Batticaloa prison.

LTTE Media Coordinator Daya Master told the Daily News that the two Home Guards will be released soon following the release of 10 LTTE cadres. However, he was unable to give an exact date for releasing the two homeguards.

According to Batticaloa prison sources they have been ordered to free the 10 LTTE cadres on bail.

Eight of the cadres (four males and four females) were arrested on July 14, 2003 in Kalladi, Batticaloa and detained under the Offensive Weapons Ordnance. The two others were arrested by the Valachchenai Police on July 07, 2003. The eight LTTE cadres arrested in Kalladi were Rajeeva Kumar, G. Dayananda, S. Suthakaran, T. Muralitharan, S. Thirimanju, N. Pulithamalar, N. Manjula and V. Shyamala.

E.P. Rajendran and V. Chandrakuma who have been arrested by the Valachchenai Police on July 07, 2003 were released on bail.

The 10 LTTE cadres have been released on the condition that they should report to the nearest Police station on the last Sunday of every month. The Deputy Chief of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News that they are expecting the LTTE to release the two Homeguards soon.

The two home guards D. Sarath Bandara and Chandana Piyasiri were abducted by the LTTE on August 10 in the Gonabendivewa area in Trincomalee along with two T 56 weapons and a magazine.

Civilian Organisations in Trincomalee launched a hartal campaign on Wednesday demanding the release of the two home guards. The next of kin of the two Homeguards are engaged in a fasting campaign demanding their release.
