Plaints filed against 8 JVP members by Sarath Malalasekera The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the attack on the Kotte office of former UNP Minister Ravi Karunanayake on Monday filed plaint against eight JVP members before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Miss Amalee Ranaweera. The eight JVP members are Priyantha Thusitha Gunasekera, Sisira Senpathy Kahawatte, Janaka Jayasinghe Ratnayake, M. Karunaratne Perera, Herath M. Edirisinghe, Kavindra Kumar Weerasinghe, Don Yasasiri Bandula Kannangara, M. Nihal Amerasinghe. They are charged on several counts including unlawful assembly and causing damage to the property of the Kotte election office of Ravi Karunanayake to the value of over Rs.27,200. In addition the first accused is also charged with threatening M. Sudath Perera with a firearm on March 11. All eight accused pleaded not guily to the charges preferred against them. On an application by the CID, the Magistrate issued summons on JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa and Minister Vijitha Herath to appear in court on November 18 to give evidence for the prosecution. The Magistrate also directed the eight accused to appear in court on the next date, November 18, 2004. Ranjith Caldera and Rexi Piyadasa appeared for the eight accused. |
