Gampaha group corr. Minister of Environment and Forest Resources A. H. M. Fowzie has gazetted Horagolla as a national wildlife sanctuary and park. This is the only wildlife sanctuary in the Gampaha district. According to the Assistant Director of Wildlife, Gampaha, N. C. Rupasinghe, this sanctuary which is 33 acres in extent, is situated half a kilometre on Pinnagolla road, off the Nittambuwa-Veyangoda road. It is named Horagolla due to the abundance of Hora trees. Many species of tortoises and other animals threatened by extinction are found in the sanctuary which also has a tank, 26 species of birds endemic to Sri Lanka are also found. The rare butterfly Bluemoman, Clipper, Tamil Lesbin are also found. The sanctuary is to be declared open for tourists in January 2005 and development work has started on a tourist rest and a toilet complex. A tank for bathing for animals is also under way. |
