Butterfly Children's Carnival, Exhibition from tomorrow

The 'ICE Exhibition' - Information, Communication and Education Exhibition and Butterfly Carnival organised by the Information and Media Ministry in collaboration with the Presidential Secretariat, Education Ministry and Ports and Aviation Ministry will be held at the BMICH from Saturday. It will continue till Monday.

The objective of this carnival and exhibition is to provide experience and inspiration to children of various age groups giving consideration to their knowledge, education and entertainment.

This is a national program based on the theme `Celebrating Childhood' to mark International Children's Day. Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL), Independent Television Network and Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) supports the national program while SriLankan Airlines, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Sri Lanka Telecom sponsor the event.

The opening ceremony of this national program will take place on Saturday from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera and several other guests will participate. The Butterfly Carnival will be held from 6.00 pm to 10 pm. A stage show jointly organised by the SLRC, ITN and SLBC will also be held. On October 17 and 18, the ICE exhibition and butterfly carnival will take place from 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

Media programs, stage shows, presentation by SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Ports Authority and cultural shows will also be held. The closing ceremony will be on October 18.

The ANCL has made arrangements to educate children on ANCL activities. The Mihira children's newspaper published by ANCL will be distributed among children at a concessionary price. It will contain events of this national program.

ANCL, the Government Information Department, State Printing Corporation, Colombo Dock Yard, Airport and Aviation Services Authority, Vocational Training Authority, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Development Lotteries Board, Health and Nutrition Ministry, Education Ministry and several other institutions will have exhibition stalls.

ITN and Lak Handa Radio will maintain a special area called Universal Children's Village around which a wall has been built for children of 40 schools to do wall paintings.

This painting competition and exhibition is organised by Lions District 306C and the winning school will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 15,000. The schools winning the second and third places will be awarded cash prizes of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 7,500.

Students in the age group of 11 to 13 will be given an opportunity to participate in an International Art Exhibition on 'World Peace'.

Students will be required to do paintings at the exhibition grounds and the winning entries will qualify to enter an international art exhibition in the USA.

ITN and Lak Handa Radio have also organised an eye clinic at the exhibition grounds in association with the Lions District 306C to screen 5,000 students and provide free spectacles. There will be a dental clinic for schoolchildren. These clinics will be held from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. daily.

Other features at the ITN/Lak Handa Universal Children's Village will include an exhibition of international currency notes and coins, aqualife exhibition stalls, computer technology stalls and a live 'Ata Pattama' television program.

A special coupon will be issued to each child visiting the ITN/Lak Handa Universal Children's Village. A special draw on coupons will be held daily and the school of the child having the winning coupon will be gifted a television set.
