Lankan paddlers Thilina, Ishara excel in Male by N. U. Abdul Razzak reporting from the Maldives Two Sri Lankan national paddlers Thilina Piyadasa and Ishara Madurangani who were in Male' for ten days for their Club Hasparus for the 44th National Tournament justified their selection as both made impressive performance in their respective team events to lift the title in their club's favour. Twenty five year old Thilina who is ranked No. One in Sri Lanka showed his class when he beat his rival Balaji of India who is ranked as No. 01 in Kerala. Thilina an undergraduate of Sri Jayawardanapura University of Colombo and six times national champion won his match by 3-1 against Balaji who was flown in to Maldives for this tournament for his club Offu F.C. In the women's team event Lanka Junior player Madurangani from Devananda College of Ambalabgoda who is ranked 8th in Sri Lanka beat her rival Aishath Samahath who is ranked No. 02 in Maldives by 3-0. Fourteen year old Lankan lass who is the Junior Asian Bronze Medalist also beat Maldivian No.03 Aishath Aleefa by 3-0 on her way to excellence thus contributing for her club Hasparus to claim the women's team event as well. The national coach of Maldives Vajira Wickramasinghe told the "Daily News" that the exposure of expatriate players such as that of Sri Lanka and India help the Maldivian players learn the skills quickly. |
