News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Permission granted to proceed against JHU in expulsion case by Wasantha Ramanayake The Supreme Court yesterday granted permission to proceed against the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) in an expulsion case filed by parliamentarian Ven. Aparekke Pemananda Thera challenging his expulsion from the party. The Court directed the petitioner's counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse PC to publish the notice in national newspapers in three languages in terms of the Article 99(13)(a) of the Constitution. Ven. Aparekke Pemananda Thera cited the JHU, its leader Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka, Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake and Parliamentary Secretary General Priyani Wijesekera as respondents. Ven. Pemananda Thera stated that he was informed by a letter dated August 18 that the JHU Central Committee had decided to expel him from the JHU, on the basis of that he acted in violation of the party constitution. He stated that the decision was illegal and had no force since the JHU had no constitution. He claimed that he was only a member of the Uttaritara Sanga Sabha and was not a party member. Ven. Pemananda Thera sought to determine the expulsion to be void and sought to continue as a Member of the Parliament. The Court granted time to file objections on or before October 15. President's Counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse with Rasika Dissanayake instructed by W. Chaminda Sanath Wijewardane filed the petition. The hearing was fixed for October 29. |
