Japan has donated Rs. 55 million to construct a four storied building in the Karawanella hospital on an appeal made by Labour and Foreign Employment Minister and Kegalle district MP Athauda Seneviratne. Seneviratne, laying the foundation stone for the proposed building said, when he took to politics in 1960, Karawanella was the only hospital in the three korales, in the Kegalle district. But it was underdeveloped and lacked several facilities. There was a shortage of drugs, doctors and other shortcomings. He said, when he was the Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa, he decided to upgrade this hospital to a base hospital status, with the co-operation of the president. This hospital now has all facilities including an uptodate surgery unit, children's ward, infectious diseases unit, and ENT clinic etc., for which he was grateful to the President for the assistance and encouragement given.
