More space for Pinnawela elephants by Florence Wickramage The Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawela will be upgraded as the Elephant Conservation and Breeding Centre and the entire complex including the large extent of land will be redesigned to afford more protection and movement facilities for elephants. The National Zoological Gardens which will handle redevelopment work of the Pinnawela Elephant Orphange commenced work on the program recently under the direction of Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie. The complex will be redesigned to include large open buildings to house elephants and a new corridor for elephants to reach the Ma Oya for their baths. No trade stalls will be allowed by the side of the new corridor and it will be out of bounds for the public. The new corridor will be mapped out since the present corridor is flanked on either side by trade stalls and restaurants which disturb the quiet passage of elephants. Other developments include an elevated viewing platform for the public so that elephants on a lower elevation in landscaped natural habitats will be undisturbed. A proposed new building complex within the gardens will include facilities for visitors, shopping stalls and an information centre. The present entrance gate will be shifted to another location inclusive of an updated ticketing booth with redesigned attractive tickets which visitors could keep as souvenirs. |
