SLBC looks to the East

by P. Krishnaswamy

The inauguration of the proposed Regional Broadcasting Station for the Eastern province is one of the several development programs to be launched islandwide to mark the 10th year completion of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as Executive President of the country.

Information and Media Deputy Minister, Cegu Issadeen, has consented to provide funds from his decentralised budget allocations for the establishment of the broadcasting station.

Issadeen and SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe recently toured several areas of the Eastern province to find a suitable location for the proposed broadcasting station, Ministry sources said.

The sources said that although the location of the station has not been finalised yet, it will be established in one of the four important towns - Akkaraipattu, Kalmunai, Oluvil or Sammanthurai.

Many in the Eastern province have expressed their willingness to support this project.
