No more plain sailing for ex-Navy conmen by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Pettah Police yesterday apprehended two ex-sailors who had got away with several lakhs worth of jewellery and money belonging to young girls working in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone after allegedly raping them. The two suspects were arrested by Police while they were loitering at Gunasinghapura, Pettah waiting for a "prey", Police said. Pettah Crimes OIC Inspector Hemantha Ovitigama told the Daily News that the suspects had been attached to the Parakrama Unit of the Navy Headquarters previously. According to the Inspector, the well built ex-sailors in their late twenties had waited outside the garment factories flirting with girls returning home after work. Preliminary investigations revealed that as the initial step of their plan they get into the bus and have a nice friendly chat with a girl returning home and collect all information, the OIC said. Later they give a contact number and ask them to come to desired location. The suspects had allegedly raped girls at knifepoint and blindfolded them before getting away with all the valuable possessions including jewellery and money. Police found a bundle of bills where the suspects had pawned the jewellery. Since Police had received only a few complaints of alleged attempts of rape and theft in connection with the ex-sailors due to fear, the Inspector requested the affected parties to come forward and identify the jewellery. On directions of the SSP Colombo Central D.P.L Dissanayeka, ASP Central Range Premalal Ranagala and Pettah OIC Ceril Wijeysena are investigating further. |
